OUR HISTORY
Over the past several decades, New England Fabricated Metals has grown from a three-person operation built in a barn into the full-scale, sheet metal manufacturing and machining business it is today. Our story is one of dedication, strategic partnerships, and evolution.
In 1983, three friends pooled their money and opened a small sheet metal fabrication business. They worked out of a property in Chelmsford, MA doing research and development for local companies. Over the course of the next few years, they expanded their equipment list to include a punch, added a few more local businesses to their roster, and developed the name New England Fabricated Metals, Inc.
It wasn’t until 1994, when NEFM opened its first brick and mortar facility in Littleton, MA, that the business truly solidified its name in the sheet metal manufacturing industry. By this time the shop had grown in size and capabilities. We added new machines and updated our approach to provide the fast-turn, just-in-time delivery, and short-run production for which we have become known.
We thrived in the age of telecommunications, expanding to three facilities by 1998. Our reputation grew as we secured business with Fortune 500 customers. But as the telecommunications industry began to phase out, we had to adapt our approach and focus our attention on new business lines.
This evolution meant we had to refocus our priorities. In 2002, we consolidated back to one facility and explored new industries. As consumer products and industrial electronics gained popularity, we provided casings for devices ranging from DeShaw Industry’s supercomputers to custom keyboards for Air Force One and nuclear submarines. We even created a prototype for the original Keurig coffee maker.
This was an exciting time in our development and in 2007 we made the move to our current facility in Leominster. Since then, we have continued to tailor our capabilities to the evolving needs of the sheet metal manufacturing industry and our dynamic customer base.
In 2013, we opened up our machining shop to better serve customers with niche requirements, such as specific tolerances, material finishing, and complete assembly. Over the years, NEFM has maintained its commitment to customer service, continuous improvement, and staying at the forefront of manufacturing technology. Our customer base has continued to evolve as the medical and robotics industries have grown in size and demand. Through it all we have preserved our resilient nature and our continual drive to learn and meet the needs of a changing industrial landscape.
In 2021, NEFM joined the DelCam Manufacturing family of businesses ensuring that all NEFM products will continue to be proudly made in the USA.
